Practice: Make Your Fun List

When someone asks what you like to do for fun, it can be surprisingly hard to answer. Work, responsibilities, and routines can take up so much space that fun becomes something you hope happens instead of something you intentionally make room for.

This practice helps you build a list you can actually use when you need a little fun.

Start with what you already know.

What makes you laugh?

What do you enjoy doing with other people?

What do you enjoy doing by yourself?

What have you done before that you would happily do again?

What sounds fun even though you haven't done it yet?

BUILD YOUR LIST

Create three categories:

“I Have 15–30 Minutes”
Small things you can do without much planning.

“I Have a Few Hours”
Things you could do when you have an open afternoon or evening.

“Let’s Make a Day Of It”
Experiences worth putting on the calendar.

Don't worry about making the list impressive. Fun can be dancing around your house, playing cards with friends, going to a comedy show, taking yourself to the movies, roller skating, spending an afternoon at a festival, or doing something completely different.

Keep your list somewhere easy to find. The next time you think, “I need to do something fun,” you won't have to start from scratch.
